Tips for Protecting Your Body This Summer

Whether you are spending time playing with the kids at the water park, tending to the garden neglected during the winter and spring, or enjoy a sporting event under the summer sun, here are five tips for keeping your body protected this season.

1) Remember your Sunscreen!

One of the best ways to protect your body this summer is to ensure your skin – our number one line of defense against the elements – stays healthy. Sunscreen is always a summertime necessity even when the clouds are looming because sun rays always find a way to reach the skin. Without sunscreen, the skin is left vulnerable to continuous sun exposure which could cause irreversible damage to skin cells. Sunscreen of at least SPF 15 helps keep the skin protected from damaging sun rays and reducing the chance of getting sun damage-related skin cancer.

2) Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of fluids is also a necessary part of enjoying the summer weather. Every single part of the body requires some water to survive, and when there isn’t enough to go around, dehydration can take place quickly. Being dehydrated could cause temporary dry mouth, fatigue, headache, or dizziness. To stay adequately hydrated during the hot summer months, take care to drink plenty of cool water and supplement meals with foods such as fruits and vegetables that are high in water.

3) Recognize Signs of Heatstroke

Both older individuals and young children are at a higher risk of experiencing heat stroke and especially during the summer months. Red, hot, dried out skin combined with a high body temperature or a strong pulse may indicate a day out in the sun has put too much strain on the body. Some individuals experience a throbbing headache or nausea when heat stroke is near. Knowing the signs of this common summer medical condition can help you and your friends and family steer clear of the negative effects heat stroke can have on the body.

4) Pay Attention to Medications

Anyone who is taking a prescription medication should take the time to understand the possible side effects that UV rays can have on the body during hotter months. For some medications, increased sensitivity to UV rays is a common outcome which ultimately leads to more intense, quicker sunburn than normal. If you’re unsure if your prescription medications have this overlooked side effect, contact your pharmacist or doctor before spending a day in the summer heat.

5) Take it Easy

The beautiful weather and long daytime hours during the summer prompt people to get outside and be more active than they may be during cooler months. While increasing your activity level is beneficial to your overall health, it’s easy to push your body too far too quickly. Starting to run or jog again, playing with the grandchildren, or enjoying water sports could all lead to an injury. Make sure your body is in its best shape before heading out to exercise and take it easy when you start to feel like you might be on the verge of pushing too far.
